My dad wrote on the back:

"1955 This truck used to transport 8 baby elephants from Thousand Oaks, Calif. to Forest Park Zoo, St. Louis."

Four of the eight came in the spring of 1954, the rest in the fall. Floyd Smith went out to Thousand Oaks to train them during the winter. On their way to St. Louis the act stopped at some major AB distributors. When the act got to the Zoo they were presented in the new "Lion Arena" for 1955-56. The new Elephant House and Arena was completed in 1957.

The remaining four of the original act plus another elephant were sold to Paul Kelly. Bert Pettus and crew spent two days loading them. They never went on the road.
