The rider on this elephant reminded me of an account of the 1883 Barnum and London show that I recently read. It was from a Woodstock, Ontario paper. What startled me was that the reporter noted that Jumbo was giving rides in the menagerie top. Jumbo, of course, had done this at the London Zoo for years and we have dozens of pictures of him doing so, but I never knew he did it on B&L. Plus, this is the earliest elephant ride I've come across. I wonder if Matthew Scott was trying to make a couple of extra bucks like he did in England? Anybody out there in the ether have commetns on this? Fred Pfening
