My dad was on this show in 1924 and one of the stories he used to tell concerned Mr. Odom. It was about the transfer of the Robinson and H-W elephant herds. At the close of the season, Cheerful and the Robinson herd would go to Peru and then the empty car would return with Bert Noyes and the H-W elephants. The night prior to departure Highpockets got drunk, tipped over a lantern and set the bull car afire. My dad described the panic involved disconnecting the car from the rest of the train by means of elephants pushing. Particularly since he chose one named "Betty" that wasn't broke to push and who promptly drug him around winter quarters. Later viewing the remains of the car, burned to the water line, he heard someone say, "Here comes the old man!" and then immediately saw Highpockets take off across a field on a dead run. Arriving from the hotel were Cheerful and Mr. Odom who demanded, "Where's Hi?", my dad plead ignorance then glancing down noticed that Mr. Odom was holding a pistol. I wonder what Governor McLeod would think of these goings-on?" Or maybe this kind of activity is not unknown in politics.

Great story!
As a South Carolinian, all I can say is that the people of this state are pretty much pointing the gun at the governor here now !
I believe that Odom was once sought, or placed on trial for having used his shooting iron. Highpockets had good reason to run.
