Downie Bros. Circus #1 (From Buckles)

MAIL0041, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

This is the 1932 elephant herd "Queen", "Pinto", "Teddy", "Babe" and "Tena".

TEDDY
1925 Rosa's Midgets "Toy Town" NY Hippodrome
1926-36 Downie Bros. Circus
1937-38 Kay Bros. Circus
1939-41 World of Mirth Shows

I never heard of Teddy being with Russell Bros. very interesting. As to his execution, I have a photo of the aftermath but I don't know the particulars. In all probability he went nuts and tried to dismantle the show.

Bob Goldsack's WOM book, pages 44-45, says that show owner Max Lindeman ordered the demise of Teddy at Raleigh, NC on October 17, 1941 as a precautionary action. He'd gone on a rampage at Lewiston, ME, damaging autos with his tusks. He'd also pulled his stake and ran away several times. Trainmaster Al Moody, who brought him to the WOM, returned from a hospital visit, only to be whacked several times by Teddy. Goldsack provides more details. A fellow named Henry Clay was then handling him.

Besdies the bulls that were in the Strates menagerie, how many elephants were with carnivals after Teddy?
