John & Mary Ruth on Eva (From Jim Cole)

CIRCUS WORLD MUSEUM, 40 YEARS AGO, 1969

Here are a few photos that I took while employed by the Circus World Museum during the 1969 season. The Vidbel animal acts came in to fill in while the John Herriott - CWM animals were in Milwaukee for the parade. Some of the other photos are from the winter dates and the Zachinni produced circus at the fair in Memphis. That was the last date the CWM animals worked while under their ownership.

Boy I can sure remember three neat trucks that hauled elephants back then; Tony Diano's with Capt.Jimmy O'Dell, the Pollack rig and then Baraboo ,in all, it's own rig, Colonel John Herriot tribe.
When I first saw that yellow and blue semi pull on the lot in San Antonio for the legendary Texas Dates, what a first class looking operation, From the rig down to the harness trappings and racks for the bulls and hoof stock it was spotless. If my memory serves me right, this display of steeds went Herriot ,Bushbaum, Cline.
1967 I believe. Could 42 years have gone by that fast?

Eva and Topsy(?) started out in America as Florence and Pearl in the St. Louis Zoo's children's zoo. Don't know if Eva was Florence or Pearl. Tony Smaha Sr. picked them up at the Zoo and took them to Baraboo.

That truck was built by W. W. Deppe in his shop just up the street from the Museum. You will remember Wilbur Deppe was a great supporter of Circus World and most all of the wagons arriving in what ever condition and pieces before restoration were hauled in by Mr. Deppe. Without Wilbur's assistance and his Deppe Classic Country Circus the Museum would have had a much more difficult time getting established and running. He is also the one that engineered the first people bridge over the Baraboo River at Circus World when the Museum got the property on the south side of the river. These are only a few of the reason that there is a W. W. Deppe wagon pavillion located next to the "Chappie" Fox Wagon Restoration Building. Ralph from Baraboo P.S. Wilbur son & grandson were very instrumental in the transportation of the wagons to the Circus Parade in Milwaukee this year.
