Circus Memories #6

1976 Ringling-4, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

That year, Charly Baumann’s music consisted of “Artistry in Bolero,” “Ritual Fire Dance,” “Man with the Golden Arm,” “The Breeze and I,” “Playera,” “Festival at Bagdad” (from “Scheherazade”) a fanfare based on “The Sea and Sinbad’s Ship” (also from “Scheherazade,”) a theme from “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Shangrala,” “Spellbound Concerto,” an excerpt from the “Polovetsian Dance” and the special fanfare which was always used at the end of Charly’s act.

Has anyone noticed that ice dancing and skating competitions are usually won by singles and pairs who've selected recognizable or great music to accompany their presentations?

Consider the selections employed with Baumann's act; think it's possible that it lifted the viewers' spirit, feelings and emotions during the time Charley was in the big cage?

When I was in film school, one of my professors told us that, when classical music is used in film scores, it will never become "dated" and transfers a certain amount of its prestige to the film. (Not that Charly ever needed any outside help to add prestige to his act!)

What I can see in this photo

is the diamond pattern of the

woven arena as I can't remember

when we changed over from the

square (bulky & difficult) to

this much better (much easier

to lace & nicopress) design

that also layed much flatter

in the ring curb

Chic,

Your comment about the woven arena was spoken like the true theatrical design maven you are!

I once escorted a young lady costume designer to a big Broadway musical. At the intermission, I asked how she liked the show.

"It's OK," she replied. "Except I think the seams on some of the costumes are a bit messy."

I,of course, hadn't noticed.

When your hands have the scars

from the quarts of dripped blood

to keep memories alive it's not

so hard to recall the cables

I notice the seams in the drops

(and all too much else)

However I really do enjoy many

of the shows I see anyway

Regarding the arena I just felt

this site might attract a few

who might care

"The Breeze and I" was also used for Clyde Beatty's act.

As a punk kid remembering back in the days of seeing Clemens,
El Kigardo,Horworth,Hoover,Anthony
and Beatty then around 66 or 67 seeing Baudi and Baumann was sure a different cup of tea.
Baudi was kind of a cross over between Beatty to Baumann in regards to the monkey shines dido's, tricks or horse behaviors, what ever you wish to call them.I sure thought Baumann's act was worked with precision. At the time I was unaware that tigers could be worked in that manner. Doing what they did, an eye opener to say the least.A thumbs up for sure from this corner.
PS.As for the tune Breeze and I,
On a Lawrence Welk album, there is a jazz-up version of it, for those who might want to know.

Our back property line borders on Sun City Center.
And on a still Saturday night you can hear the Lawrence Welk music and the women screaming.

Please see if they could use a

few bubble machines

(You make the deal and we can

do a 50-50 split)

(How about 60-40 in your favor)
