Dear Buckles, We met and had a nice chat during the intermission at Carson & Barnes in Brooksville last year. I'm in Ireland, and just saw Duffy's Circus in Wicklow yesterday. Pics are included, use what you wish.
About the show: David Duffy presented a beautiful Palimino Liberty Act, finale being the horse turning on its hind legs before wallking towards him. Sorry, don't know the terminology. His sons did a Cossock Act. Tom Chipperfiel presented a llama and pony, and his son presented a mixed cat act of one male lion, and 3 tigers. Terrific Mongolian troupe of acrobats, exciting Brazilian fliers, Gino the clown. Very nice show, good production values, well paced. Nice lighting and costumes. Exciting opening number included everyone with hula hoops, and central girl being flown to the top of the tent while working the hoops, jump ropes, juggling, and three aerial rings. Two hour show with intermission. Interesting, both fliers, and cage act were in first part. They made a speed game out of tearing down the cage with the audience cheering them on. Intimate tent seats about 600. There was no program, and at intermission they did pony rides, face painting, and pics with a python. After show, they invited the audience into the back yard to see the animals for a fee. Yours, Michael Newton-Brown |

The Palomino Horses were trained by Tom Roberts and presented for several year on Martin Burton's Zippos Circus which tours London.
The Ringmaster's Ringmaster, Norman Barrett is Zippo's eloquent voice of the Big Top.
Tom Roberts is the son of Bobby and Kitty Roberts of Englands Robert Brothers Circus.
Bobby Robert, Jr. still tours England with Robert Bros.
Sue Lenz can add much more information.
I was under the impression the The Solvinos were clowning on Duffy's this year. Husband and wife duo, she working white-face. His facial make-up is quite light.

That sounds like a great place to lose one's self for a couple of hours. No programs??? How do they make any money?
Neat looking show.
Well keep equipment.
A hard working show owner?
Somebody is taking this personally.
Great photos "Sir Michael"
Looks like a thumbs up kind of operation.
One thing that strikes me with the European shows is how sparkling clean the equipment and interior always is. No banged-up, paint peeling mud caked equipment in sight. I can't imagine Ireland has any less rain and mud that we do. How do they do it?
Aren't the animal rights activists a big problem in Ireland? Is the lion/tiger act received well?
Maybe the animal activists are not welcomed by the IRA.
Great photos, Michael. It's a flashy looking show. In addition to the tent and facade, they have obviously spent a lot of bucks (or pounds or is it Euros in non-British Ireland?) on lighting and wardrobe.
For those of you who don't know Michael, he is a Clown College graduate, lighting designer of Broadway and touring shows and now a leading director/set and lighting designer in the Sarasota area.
Great job Michael, thanks for sharing! ~frank
Thanks Jack. No animal rights activists in sight at the matinee. Yes, the show is very clean, and looks freshly painted, and it has rained a lot here. Only 2 cats worked in the arena although 2 extra tigers were there. Dad was in the arena as well. I think he is teaching the son the ropes, and starting to put a new act together. Just the one clown. Yes, I wish there was a program. Tent sat about 600, only a little under a 100 at our show.

Nice photos on the site, very contemporary looking presentation. The web site is worth a visit.

Nice profile of the Duffy Family and their story of the circus in Ireland (my ancestral home).
Unfortunately. Duffy's recently had some of their transport damaged by the animal rights terrorists. I agree with Jimmy, very nice looking kit!
