Peggy and Mac #1

Scan11885, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Bailey Bros. Circus 1947, Peggy and Mac MacDonald with "Christy", "Carrie" and "Babe" that Mac had trained for Big Bob Stevens the previous winter in So. Carolina.
They may have been the first elephants imported after the war.
There were four originally but the smallest (Mac named her "Mike") died shortly after arrival.

I think I remember my Dad saying that Bailey Bros wintered at the fairgrounds in Newberry, South Carolina, which is about 35 miles northwest of Columbia. Is this correct ?

I believe Newberry is correct but it would probably have been in a Fairgrounds as opposed to a winter quarters like York.

Buckles,
A November 1946 news article documents Bob Stevens "raving about the three new little elephants" he bought. Would these have been Christy, Carrie and Babe, with the "Smallest and Only Twin Elephants" Shirley and Mike a separate purchase?
