"You Gotta Have a Gimmick" from Gypsy as seen in the 1988 Broadway production of Jerome Robbins Broadway.
Jason Alexander introduces the piece and you will see future Broadway star, Faith Prince, as Tessi Tura, the first stripper.
Gypsy was based on the life on Gypsy Rose Lee. This scene depicts young Rose in the strippers' dressing room after accidently being booked into a Burlesque Theatre with her mother and fellow girl performers.
Tessi Tura informs Rose that in order to be stripper, "All you gotta have is no talent."
This is one of the funniest numbers ever to appear on the Broadway stage, in my humble opinion.
And isn't it true, in all forms of show business, You Gotta Have a Gimmick, even in the circus.
Yes Mike
Certainly true for me
It's been one gimmick after
another all these years
A fun side note for me is
that Marilyn Caskey the actress
that played "Electra" in this
recent production mentioned
is currently playing "Madame
Morrible" the headmistress in
one of our touring companies
of the musical "Wicked"
The entire world of Broadway
is made up of many fewer
folks than you would imagine
