Tony and Pio, Jr on Ringling, they used "THE PILATUS" as their name.
Years later, Tony informed me that the name was created for Ringling; Pilatus is a mountain in Switzerland. Since there were many "Nock" named acts in the printed program they wanted a "non-Nock name" to make the poles stand-out.
I remember Tony spinning floss, waiting for the opportunity to get back into the ring, the next year he and Tony started doing the swaypole act. One of the best routines I've ever seen with a nerve racking finish as they plummeted to the base of the poles at breakneck speed head first! ~frank
In one building in Japan on Paul Kaye's first tour (I think first), there the ceiling was too low for the poles. Fortunately their was a freight elevator in the right place on the floor and the bases of the poles were 10' below the floor. Seeing Tony and Pio drop head first through the floor only to appear seconds later up a pair of ladders was truly amazing.

Some people think wild animal acts, like chimps, elephants, cats, and especially bears are more than they would want to approach. Speaking just for myself, these high acts, like Bill and Trudy's Los Kimris Duo, Marvin Seabright, Sport Matthews, and the Nocks sway poles are acts I had a hard time watching. I remember heading back to the dressing room when they were on. They were great, engaging artists, but their work was so chilling, I knew these were stars I could never equal. I chose a nice, safe act on the ground...something I could deal with face on.
The published name in the program was the Pinotos - Sorry to diagrre with you Mr. Naghton.
Just spent a week visiting with Mike Nock at Allentown Fair. On hand to cut up jackpots was a new acquaintance, John Strong Jr., who had two shows on the Powers midway. Bill Hall, agent, and Bill Hall carney out of Orlando area shared in gabbing personally and via phone. Also, I managed to get a call to Antonio Estrada during the week who is still in Sarasota and doing well. The Estradas were real mainstays on the old Beatty show. It has been quite some time since I saw a number of these guys.
