Little John said...: In the last years of his life Jewel was known as a golfer here in Polk County. In the golfing / poker circles, Haines City is well respected because of the Southern Dunes golf course built by this guy named Huey who has won the poker championship in Las Vegas I think twice. A golfing friend of mine told me that Southern Dunes is one the most challenging courses in Florida. I am not sure that the challenge is because of the grounds or because of the wagers that make the game here such a challenge here, but Alice Cooper is known to frequent Southern Dunes. At Jewels memorial, several of his golfing buddies where there and never knew of his gift to train animals or his Circus life. Sammy was there at the memorial with an equally respected elephant man from the compound down the road whose name escapes me, Terri and I and Jewel’s Texas family were the only Circus kind of send off other than the life size picture of Jewel and Kenneth. But yeah Gary, this Ringmaster brought back thoughts of Jewel to me too.; 06 May, 2009 19:38
