Polar Bears #8

These two shots were taken inside of the San Diego Sports Arena just before the start of a matinee performance. (Seeing all those bears lined up like this must have been quite a thrill for arriving audience members.)

Notice how vast the arena looked in those days with just the plumbing overhead.
In today's format the Rock Concert lighting frame serves as a lid in an effort to obscure the unneeded upper seats and the proscenium likewise reduces more eye sores as well as one quarter of the unnecessary floor space.
I would even go so far as to say that even Governor Paterson could see that things aren't what they used to be.

Eric,
I will vouch for the unbelievable sight of walking in to the building and seeing the Polar Bears lined up. By the time you walked through the stable and saw Buckles and his herd, and Charly and his tigers and then walked into this sight, for a young kid I might as well have died and gone to Circus heaven.

Buckles, you are spot on, Ray Charles could "sense" it was not what it was without seeing the lowered rigging, or back drop curtain. It's about down to the size of a European tent show, so it would make sense to move into one, and make it seem bigger then what it is.
