The Memphis Zoo recieved a 25 year old female African elephant from a private owner near Tampa last week named Gina. Would this be the Terry Frisco animal? Bob
Memphis zoo had arguably the most prolific hippo breeding program in USA. It started when they got Venus and Adonis in 1914.
A number of their offspring went to circuses - - Miss Iowa to Robbins in 1926 - - Miss Oklahoma to Kelly Miller in 1949, and the male to King Bros (ca. 1953).
There is a story that in the mid 40's Roland Butler handled some ar folks when they criticized The Show's animal care program. A "small person" had fallen into the open mouth of a hippo (Lotus?)as s/he yawned. Their criticism was how could they be so callous as to allow the animal to become so bored that it yawned. His counter was direct, how can you be so callous as to not honor the poor person who fell? My understanding is that Roland didn't mince words other than to make them, let's say, colorful and to the point. Any thoughts?
