From Jim Cole #1

HippodromeShow, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

A little research and I answer my own question! I also found "Hippodrome" as well as this 6 episode Super Circus DVD.

I seem to recall a circus TV show that aired here in the USA in the late '60s. I remember seeing many acts on the show that I was familiar with, including the Albert Rix Bears and the Circus World Museum 12 pony act presented by John Herriott. Not sure if it is the same show that the DVD is from. "Hippodrome" claims to be acts from Europe" while the show I recall came out of the USA. The TV hosts listed all are well known American TV personalities from that era. Does any one else recall that show? It might have been called "Colosseum" ? Buckles, didn't you work on it?

Has anyone seen this DVD yet? Both are available on Amazon.com.

I talked to Tim Tegge yesterday and he has both the Hippodrome and Super Circus DVDS in his collection. He said the Hippodrome show did in fact come out of England, but the DVD does include some acts that worked here in America. The Super Circus DVD has at least two episodes that he had not before seen.

He said both DVDs are well worth having if you are a serious circus act historian.

Hi Jim-
This was a British tv series with American personalities as hosts.
An excellent dvd set.
I will let Sue Lenz describe the highlights as it was she that recommended the dvds to me a while back.

My two favorites are: Rogana and her sword-to-dagger balancing along with Ivor Rosaire and the Robert Brothers Circus elephants. Ivor was Derrick Sr's older brother.

I made an error -- the Robert Brothers Circus elephants are NOT presented by Ivor Rosaire, they were trained by Ivor but presented on the HIPPODROME by one of the Roberts.

Does anyone know where Rogana is todeay. I saw her on both Cliff Vargas show and RBBB yraes ago.

Unless I am very much mistaken, Dora Rogge (Rogana) and her husband Frank Foster (Jr) are retired and living in Florida.
The TV show "Hippodrome" certainly went out in and from Britain, but it seems that there was an American version too. The American cut of the DVDs was released before the British version.

This set of DVD’s are part of the TV shows that were made in Wembley Studio near London, England by the American Joe Gates, Hippodrome Series.

These DVD’s are obviously cuts from all the series, with guest stars from America. ( Jack Carter, Tony Randall, Woody Allen, Merv Griffen and a couple of others) Marching bands and troupes of Girl pipers.

Some of the acts included are Harold Alzana’s Highwire, Billy Smart’s Polar Bears presented by Walter Milde, Robert Bros Circus Lions presented by Captain Sydney Howes, Gerd Siemoneit and his mixed wild animal act, Karl Antoine mixed group, Ruppert’s Wonderful Bears.

Sir Robert Fossett’s Elephants, presented by Ivor Rosaire, Robert Bros Circus Elephants trained by Bobby Snr & Bobby Jnr and presented by Bobby Roberts Jnr with him tumbling at the finish, Moni the cigarette smoking elephant presented by Monique Holzmuller, Woody Allen boxing the kangaroo from Robert Bros Circus, Dubsky‘s football dogs.

Many great acts like The Feller Boys & Dodo, Perch of Jorgen & Conny, Rogana sword balancer, Maryse Begary trapeze, Les Medinas ladder balance(Jimmy & April Fossett), Rodriguez Bar act, Alma Piaia, Three Ghezzis, Samson & Delilah, Hermanis diabolo act, Moroccan tumblers, Tumbling Volants, Morlidor Trio contortion act, Herculeans, Hugh Forgie & Shirley, badminton, Many flying acts, Artons, Leotaris, Armors,

Clowns Charlie Cairoli with Jimmy Buchanan & Paul King, The Chabris, Bario & Bario. Ringmaster Frank Foster.

I am sure that there are many more acts that I have missed but the above will give you some idea of what is on these excellent DVD’s

I have purchased at least a dozen of these sets for friends in UK and all are delighted with them.
