The Ortons #10

Scan10902, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

To get these Orton pictures I rummaged through my mothers collection and came across this picture she had hand painted.
It is dated Jan. 22, 1937 in Savannah, Georgia.
I wonder if it might have been taken in regard to a job application with Barnett Bros. since this was our first year with that show.

Hello Buckles,
Your mother was extremely talented in her artistic endeavors as this photo illustrates. Actually, it is an excellent example of a very difficult craft. Hand-coloring of photographs was done with oil paints, as watercolors would dissolve the gelatin surface of the photographic emulsion and tinting of skin tones, especially the delicate pink cheeks in this photo was particularly difficult to accomplish. Many period hand-colored photos were ruined with too heavy an application of paint and often hand-colored photographs are not of very good quality. Certainly, the subtle delicate glazes and careful application of the paint in this example, proves your mother was an exceptional talent. Do you have any more photos that were colorred by your mother that you could show? They are certainly masterful!
