"Elephant Man" #1 (From Joey Ratliff)

E-man, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Good evening Buckles,

Now that the weather is cooling and keeping the hurricanes away, I can get back to important things, blogging!
I ordered this book a couple of months ago and thought you and the blog folks might be interested. It is about a fellow named Chris Gallucci and the elephant Timbo at the Shambala preserve in California. Animal Planet fans may remember a documentary on him called "Tusk and Tattoos" that was shown about 3 years ago. Anyway, the story goes that Mr. Gallucci was something of a bad seed in his youth and ended up on the set of the movie "Roar" as a welder. When the filming finished all the animals, including bull elephant Timbo, stayed put and the Shambala Preserve was started by Tippi Hedren. Mr. Gallucci stayed on to take care of the elephant, for the next 30 years. Pretty good story about finding somethig to make life matter.
Buckles, do you know anything about this bull, Timbo, prior to him being at Shambala? I know there was also an African cow named Kura there for a while but she is not mentioned in the book. Thanks.

Joey

"Never heard of "Timbo" but in 1975 I visited the Vargas Show in Orlando and Wally Ross had an African female in the herd named "Koora" and he gave me this info.

KOORA
1966-69 Africa USA- Saugus, Calif.
1970-71 Africa USA- Fillmore, Calif.
1972 MarineWorld- Redwood City, Calif.
1973-77 Circus Vargas
(No further record)

Hugo Schmitt once asked if he could look into "Anna May's" eyes, I had seen him do this before. I think he was waiting for me to ask if he saw anything but I didn't bite."

In the summer of 1972, just before I went to work at WQT's in Venice. I drove Dr.Martin Dinnes mobile vet truck and a trailer load of equipment from Dallas to L.A. for him. While there I went with him on his rounds in the area. We visited Tippy,(who he is now married to) and I saw this male, and he had broken her leg by accident the year before. I didn't see the tatooed dude there, but she did offer me a job. Glad I refused and then worked for Ringling and Buckles!

G'day All,
I met the president of the publishing company that published this book back in Sept. and he sent me a copy of the book. He also wanted me to help with putting a book together on elephants, but so far no word back from him! The following is the info I have on Timbo, plus I have a number of his younger photos from when Toby Styles took them a number of years ago.

Penticton Game Farm:

-Imported from Germany (Berlin Zoo?)

-Sold to Shambala Preserve, Acton California, 1973
