I think what happened... the 5 man set up crew was running late, a half hour show delay while the seats were being set up, and no time or real reason to peak the quarter poles.
And Wade, I have always had an eye for those fine young ladies who fly through the air with the greatest of class!
Jimmy, I always liked what Big John Strong always told the "Ladies" at the Season opening meeting.."Now Girls, Lets keep the weight off and the Hair lookin nice...These Fathers that bring their Family's to the Circus, aren't payin to see what they have at home sittin on the Couch!"....
Chic and Jim, You gentlemen lost me at peaks and masts. Is a mast like a girder? I think the peak was where they hung the pulley block for the pull up arena, but I may be wrong. Wade
Mr. Burck, these are the times I am sure you wish that the Hadi temple in Evansville had rented the big C&B tent. This would make it so you know what everyone is talking about.
It's a true shame when a young booking agent is in the know but a renowned circus star hasn't the slightest clue on what's being talked about.
Dan the Booker, Why are you assuming you have a clue? Never in my whole life did I want to be in a tent. The 9 months out of 34 years I performed in one, as much as I loved Circus Vargas, convinced me I loved coliseums even more(although I deeply regret not going over to Knie). And I surly never wished the Turkey Festival was held in a tent. The potato's and dressing would get cold, and the napkins would blow all over. Wade Burck
Chic, Thank you for the information. A bale ring I know, because that's what we pulled the net cage up with, until the act went to Ringling and their overhead framework. Best wishes, Wade Burck
If I'm not mistaken, the two quater poles are pulled to the side to let the actors and animals into the arena and not have to contend with the poles!!! I have seen this arrangement many times on C&B and other shows. Bob Kitto
Chic, That's right, you tell him. You and Dan the Booker can banter about what ever you want. I'm just grateful for Charley's bottle walk and mirrored balls, but that's beside the point. Wade Burck

why is that quarter pole at such
a shallow angle
It looks like an inside quarter
being used in an outside point
Chic
Maybe the chariot races had been excluded that day.
Or maybe they were trying to
stretch a 120 to 160 to add
more seating space by peaking
the top at half mast
Chic
Chic,
HUH!!!!

Hi Wade
As so many rigging terms (both
circus & theater alike) were
originally from the sea the word
mast can be almost any vertical
pole and in my reference it is
a center pole (or king pole)
One feature of bale ring tops
is the ability to adjust the
height of the "peaks" as to
accomodate specific rigging
and weather conditions as well
as to "slightly" gain additional
interior space
The bale rings are where blocks
are attached to both raise the
tent as well as the blocks for
all act rigging
The numbers "120 & 160" refer to
the basic size in feet of the
round end sections that are at
the ends of any & all "middles"
that make up a multi segment top
That dimension is theoretical as
it is based on all other "rules"
of erection being conformed to
Mostly I was only being silly
I'm home in Sarasota for a few
weeks and can be reached at
941 366 8848 most afternoons
