You Model Builders should appreciate this one showing McLain with Bert Backstein and his two sons Bill and Oren riding "Ruth" on the Barnes lot in 1938. This picture was taken by Terrell Jacobs when the show was playing Decatur, Illinois. |

If this picture was taken in 1938 in Decatur, Illinois - it was taken on July 22, after the strike had closed Ringling-Barnum and some of the acts joined up with Barnes-Sells Floto. Did the elephants from both shows troupe together or were some of the bulls sent to quarters in Sarasota? Some of the photos in this series look like they might be from the spec Ringling-Barnum spec "Nepal" which featured Frank Buck and was a part of the show in Decatur that day.... Did Walter take over the Ringling-Barnum herd after the shows combined in Redfield, S.D?
When the Barnes Show was augmented with the RBBB "Features" 7/4/38, only four elephants were included "Big Modoc", "Barnum Queen" and the two young Africans "Puqua" and "Sudan".
This brought the herd to 21 and at the end of the season all were moved into the Sarasota Quarters making a total of 49.
McLain eventually took over the combined herds
