Historic Animal Photo #7

Rhino, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Unidentified view of what looks like a one-horned, armor-plated Indian rhinoceros. (If I'm not mistaken, these are quite rare in captivity.)

The Bronx Zoo has successfully bred "Indian Rhinocerous" in recent years with mother and calf being on display in the Zoo's Wild
Asia monorail exhibit.

Going back to the 40's and 50's,
"Bessie" was on display and very popular with zoo goers. A number of years ago two larger than life size bronze statues of her were mounted on pedestals on either side of the far entrance to the old Elephant House.

This is female Indian rhino Miss Bet at London zoo.

The pic was taken in 1864 by Frank Haes and is one of two of her taken that year. As far as is known these are the very first photos ever taken of a living rhinoceros. Both photos may be seen in John Edwards’ wonderful >>London Zoo from Old Photos, 1852-1914.<<
