The Central Park hippos were America's first breeders. The prolific pair there were named Caliph and Mrs. Murphy. They arrived in the 1880s and from 1889 to 1914 produced 10 calves of which 7 were raised.
One of them was Fatima,a long lived Ringling hippo. John Robinson's Congo was another.
Mr Reynolds I am in awe of your wealth of knowledge and since I was born in NYC and grew up in the Bronx 'til I was 8 and with other familial ties to the Big Apple, particularly appreciate and enjoy your comments along related lines.
Am I correct in recalling that the Central Park Zoo had a good breeding pair in the '50's and '60's? Seems that any number of times during that period one could pick up a Daily News and see a picture of a baby hippo in the Central Park Zoo.
Lastly, would you have any backround info. on "Zusha" who performed with RBBB a few years back?
Many thanks for this and so much more,
Paul G.
