Clownron's comment under the photo of Jimmy Brisco carrying his "lion" that it was a great place to sleep on a 3-show day brought to mind this photo of the way most folks on Ringling catch some sleep between shows back of the curtain.

I always thought the best place to sleep was in the bottom of the clown wardrobe box (when I could get away with it). The bottom was carpeted, to protect the hats in transit, and the hanging costumes kept it dark and kept the heat in, important in the excessively air-conditioned buildings. Like a cave, it was snug and cozy.

Could be the dead promoter who canceled the show on the gold unit.

Good point!
By the time you assembled and arranged all those chairs, it would be time for doors.

That must be the circus version of a "Select Comfort Matress". You select the most comfortable item you can find to put on top of the chairs and then lay down and go to sleep. If you are tired enough, you can generally sleep anywhere at any time regardless of the noise level.

I had a fold up cot that I put between Charlies tigers and Jewells lions. Use to sleep like a baby.

For a while I would catch some zzz's in the 'saw-in-half gag'. It was a box the size of a coffin, dark, and nobody knew where to find me.

It was only a matter of time before I was pre-set in ring 2 during come-in. I heard the band tuning and I realised I had slept in. I threw open the top of the box and had to walk go to clown alley in front of the audience wearing only a pair of boxers and a tank top.
