I remember that adventure.CBS was doing a segment on pets. Liz Ward, our PR person at the time, convinced the network that it would be a great time to have Big Apple Circus bring an elephant to the studio as one of the "pets". The CBS broadcast center is a couple of blocks from Lincoln Center where we were playing at the time. When they asked how we were going to get an elephant to the studio, we consulted you and you determined the easiest way would be to use Amy (the punk in the herd)and to walk her from Lincoln Center to the studio.
I was one of the lucky ones who got to walk along. The best part was observing the looks we got along the way. It was the end of the morning rush hour and those that were on the streets were generally in a hurry to get somewhere. A majority (who I'm assuming were "native New Yorkers") hardly gave Amy a glance...just another obstacle in their way. The "tourists" did double takes and rubbed their eyes. Amy, bless her heart, was a sweetheart. She followed your directions and kept on trucking all the way down the street, up the loading dock, into the freight elevator and into the studio.
We repeated the process for the return.
The PR folks loved it. It was a great hit and sold lots of tickets.
