I'm betting it was "Lewis & Zimmerman". According to Parkinson's "Directory of American Circuses", that show was owned by Paul M. Lewis and E.R. Zimmerman and operated from 1919-30. In 1931 Lewis took the show solo and it continued just as "Lewis Bros" into the mid 1940s.
As I recall, this Lewis Bros. Circus was based in Jackson, Michigan, which would make sense that the Grubers would have likely travelled with the show since Jackson is close to Muskegon. Neil Cockerline Minneapolis, MN originally raised in Chelsea, MI just 15 miles from Jackson.
