| Always the innovator, D.R mounted the stake driver on the back of the water wagon. The side poles were carried in the racks at right and the stakes in the possum bellies. After a stake was knocked down, a side pole was dropped off. The stake line was always somewhat serpentine since no layout was required with a push pole top that size. My dad never liked this arrangement since the water wagon wasn't free to make a water run for the elephants until all the stakes were down. As you can see in this picture, the operation has been halted while a couple of buckets are being filled. To the uninformed, two blasts on the whistle means "Go ahead driver!", one means "Stop!" and three means "Back up!" The man at left is Harper Hardwick and being before the days of Political Correctness was called by one and all "Wingy". |

Told to me by someone who was there-
An act wanted to buy a trailer but didn't have the scratch so DR agreed to buy the trailer and deduct payments out of their salary.
The act finds a trailers at a pretty good price and negotiates a sizable discount. DR arrives and makes the owner an offer several hundred dollars below the agreed upon price. The owner is annoyed and states, "But it has good tires and that alone is worth something," DR doesn't miss a beat and states, "Keep the tires."
