Hugo Schmitt #3

Hugo and wife Jenny working in the former Fred J. Mack big top.
I suppose the zebra "Pasha" came from Catskill Game Farm as well.

I remember seeing the Leonard Bros. Circus in my youth on a gravel lot in Hammond, IN. The local paper had a story about the elephant trainer who was formally with the Ringling show. I think the act also had the guanaco jumping the elephant for the finale at this time.

Any photos of Hugo's chimp act?

GUANACO: Yes, Hugo had a guanaco. So do we have a picture of Hugo's act including the guanaco. Hugo, John H. and Jorgen C. gave me the idea to buy a guanaco break it and add to the pony I was breaking. Alot, of excellent advice from thoe three. Each time no matter where I would visit the Ringling Show when Hugo had the elephants the first word out of his mouth would be how is the guanaco. Didn't remember my name but always addressed me as the guanaco man. Those were the day my friends.

Guanaco's name was "Max".

As we pointed out the lunge line on Patty Zerbini's Zebra on Jan. 9th, 2008, I suppose it would be appropriate to mention that there seems to be one on Hugo's Zebra also.

Here we go again. To Mr Burck. When Miss Zerbini has the time and shows to train her zebra I am sure it will do a fine performance. I would suggest that maybe Mrs. Schmidt is either putting the lung on or taking it off. My times with Herr Schmidt was they all performed sans lunge, but this w3ould be a few years before GSOE. I wish Mrs. Zerbini well and personally have never had a desire to train any of those . You do a great job with elephants why mess with zebras?

Guanocuos can move around the ring at a brisk pace and are good jumpers. Llamas stall and are not jumpers at all. Sadly, in captivity zoos are allowing the interbreeding of the specie and I doubt if we could find a pure Guanacuo. ALL PURE Gunacuos are brown and white. What a shame. The public always referrs to any of them as llamas and must admit in all of my announcements it was, "performing arabian camels and Andes mountain llamas". I now regret that.

When I put together the exotic animal act that my daughter Laura presented on Beatty and elsewhere, I tried to find Guanocuos and was fortunaye to get btwo nice white3 llamas from dealor Henry Hampton in the Carolinas. With Roy and Cindy Wells they also bhad llamas, who did a good performance but were not good jumpers.

Here we go again. Mr. Herriott, I think you are right. Mrs. Schmidtt is just putting it on. She is getting ready to lead the zebra through a fiqure 8 under Targa. LOL

John Herriott: If you remember back in your Mills Bros. days i came up northern cold Ohio and purchased a pure guanaco from Orla Drum and you drew up the ring curbs plans for me. My father built the ring curbs. I still have those plans and later Joe Frisco was with the Cinny Zoo purchased the ring curbs and Charlie Allen purchase Pasha the guanaco and at a later date I believe Max Craig ended up with Pasha. You are correct they were and excellent jumper but hard to work...I forget of you Jorgen or Hugo told me to use ladies hose so they wouldn't spit on you..One thing they could do was put you on the ground in a second....I bought some liberty horse harness from Bob couls and used parts of that on the guanaco...I believe in the end the guanaco was smarter than I...A beautiful animal...

Roy and Cindy's exotic act was excellent, with all the animals working at liberty, doing the same tricks (waltzing together, etc) One of the nicest I'd seen for a while, and not a lunge in sight.
