The shed/barn in the background was built for the baby elephants acquired in 1954-55. It was located just outside the west wall of the big rectangular elephant barn of ca 1927 and called the “Gajasala.” This punk barn must have been built while the show was on the road in 1954 because it was there, looking brand new when I visited quarters in March 1955. In fact it was freshly whitewashed because some of the punks had white paint on their rumps from backing into the interior walls.

The fancy sign reading “Baby Elephant Nursery” was added while the show was on the road in 1955 when, despite heavy losses, they did some remodeling in the quarters. The sign shows up in pics taken in quarters in 1956 and later.
