Rats. At the risk of revealing I'm not the leading circus historian, I thought Hubert Castle originated the Elephant Brass Band in the winter of 1971. I assisted his construction of the instruments in his garage on Peavy Road, in Dallas. I even took turns with him trying to get the tuba to blow through a special elephant mouthpiece, and thought I was in on making circus history. Damn.

But that's not as bad as the time the Prop Boss, Lee "G" (who knows what that stands for?) Noblett, loaded up and left the prized band props in Valentine, Nebraska, and had to double back from Norfolk to retrieve them. Castle never let him live it down.
