Okay, that is a story I have not heard. What is the scoop?
Don Bloomer
Smokey told me that he and Cotton blew the Dailey Show (1944?)and wound up at the
chicago Stadium looking for work.
There were three elephant acts appearing there, my dad with Terrell Jacobs three, Will Hill's two and Harry Haag had one. Each act had a "Judy".
Mr. Hill put them both to work but right away Nig Whalen tipped them off, "Watch that Dukie, he'll send you for the laundry".
At the conclusion of the date while loading out the truck, they decided to hide Hill's elephant tubs and headpieces as a precautionary measure.
Sure enough, when Dukie showed up he said, "Everything loaded?".... "Yes Sir!"..... "Oops! I forgot to pick up my laundry, it's about three blocks away. Here's $10, hurry back and we'll leave".
Well aware no laundry existed they put the headpieces into a grain bag and hitch hiked back to the Dailey Show.
When they arrived Louie Reed showed them a telegraph he had just received from Hill. "Don't give Smokey or Cotton a job if they show up. They are a pair of thieves!"
I once saw a photo of W.Hill rigs. He ran with two semis, pretty sharp outfits. On Smokey's head stone Scott R. put "on the wrong lot" which is as good as "sent to do the laundry".
On my Headstone I would like "Who booked this Stiff!" Jim Zajicek
Curator, I believe, "Life Partner and best friend of Daisey Mae", would be more appropriate.
Wade Burck
For those not in the know, Daisy Mae is a two nosed full grown dairy cow.
"Yes, truly stranger than it seems"
