Buckles I recall you mentioning you were on quite a boat ride and found great comfort in your helmet,Was it on the cruise ship to Korea? I can't recall where you said you were heading.
We shipped out of Ft. Lewis aboard the USS General Gaffey and the first few days at sea I was positively at death's door. Seventeen days to Japan during which I never had a meal I was sure would stay down. One night they showed a movie on the fan tail and I decided to take a chance and damned if it didn't turn out to be "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". Their ship would list to port while ours listed to starboard and when Peter Lorre made his mad dash for the railing I immediately went below. The final insult came as we disembarked in Yokohama, I overheard one of the ship's Officers say, "That was the calmest crossing I've had in the past five years."
Well here is my war story. Got drafted and reported one day after working the Cole Show Palominoes at a Barnes-Carruthers fair in Caro, Mich. Did basic training in Ft. Sill, Okla. as a Canoneer on a 105 Howitzer. Needed guys like that in Korea and flew us to Japan. Got called in the Repo Depooffice in regard that I was a dog trainer and needed a replacement for the 26th Infantry Scout Dog Platoon. Rode a trou ship to Korea and the went north by train, truck, jeep and walking into North Korea [past 38th paralell at that time] We went on ambush and recon patrols with various line companys at night in "no mans land" [out in front of the main line of resistance]. Dog was trained to alert by scent or sound anybody in the area. Pretty hairy, out at sunset and back before dawn. Got the "combat infrantryman" badge [three months on front line in infrantry co.] of which I am quite proud. I rode home on the USS GEN> POPE troup ship to San Fran. and then back to Minnesota just like nothing had ever happened. Like that little Ausrian ass hole I made Corporal.
I truley salute you Gents A.K.A "The Elders" Mr.Herriot Your first paragraph brought Mr.Hubert Castle to mind, A big two thumbs up spoken by myself, truly an arm chair quarterback on the subject. However; what the hell do you mean you did not receive any psycho counseling??? I thought that is what this blog was all about?
My mother used to tell the story of my father's discharge in December of 1953. The troop ship from Japan went to Mare Island or Port Chicago in San Francisco Bay, and I believe he was formally released from Oakland Army Base. My mother was there waiting for him after coming west on the train. He had just enough money when he was discharged to buy a car. My Mom had enough for gas to LA. They spent the first three weeks after his discharge sleeping in the car and working on floats for the Rose Parade in Pasadena putting together enough cash to make the trip to South Carolina where the Strates show wintered back then. It was certainly a different world. Nobody had figured out how to make a buck off post-traumatic stress.
In H.S. I took the Military apptitude Test...The Recruiter tells me I scored High...So I can "Pick" my Field (Except Pilot..Cause of my eyes) I tell him I am interested in Electronics.(figure this is the wave of the Future) He says: then I have the Job for you! and rattles off "charlie 625" ( can't remember the actual #) I reply Whats that..He proceeds to tell me that I'll be handlin TOP SECRET info and that the FBI will be doin a background check on me and my family because the info will be ultra sensitive...and that when I get out Motorola and IBM will offering me "Lots-o-cash Big big prizes!!! Sounded GREAT! till I asked my Brother (8 yr. vet) what Charlie 625 was?.....When He told me that I'd be packin a field radio in the FRONT!....Well...I went back to the Circus....Jim Zajicek P.S. However, Both my Brothers and my Father are Vets
"We should have put every effort militarily to go into Afghanistan and Pakistan immediately and got that Ben Saden and put Iraq on the back burner and world opinion be damned and we would be back as the leader of the free world. What a shame."
Do we have to politicize everything? I thought this was a circus BLOG, not another forum for anti-Bushies. Please save that for your local rag and let's get on with the circus postings.
I would like to thank you vets, sincerely. I would also like to point out to Mr. or Mrs. ANONYMOUS, Mr. Herriot put his ass out there defending the country I am from (I cannot know where you come from, cause you didn't put a name, thats cowardice, and unamerican) I personally think most would enjoy the stories and opinions of the circus-vets. This is just my opinion, which counts for two of yours, cause I signed mine.
I find it fascinating that the military used Mr. Herriots' animal skills in a way useful to war. Would love to know if anyone else has similar story.
To all who read and post here and served, my thanks and gratitude. While I might not always agree with everything y'all may say, it was you who defended my right to say that. Thank you for putting your assets on the line for my sorry one.
Capt and Col Herriot and to all of the other Veterans that served, I would like to say Thank You to you all for your Service. I had planned that, if I was drafted for Vietnam, I would sign up and go for the "Dog Units" like you did Col. Luckily, I was at Ringling Winter Quarters when I was informed the draft was no more!
Hubert Castle told me he "trained kids to kill other kids with their bare hands", as an instructor in the Army. I asked him more about that, and on the many times I went to house on Peavy Road for consultations and Mary's hearty dinners, he'd take me out in the back yard. There he gave me such training that I've put to fine use a time or two. The purpose was to teach our kids to fight to the other guy's death, not their own, and Hubert knew his business.
I agree with Casey that knocking a veteran's comments by signing "anonyous" is most cowardly and un-American. A returned, surviving American combat veteran has a right to say anything he wants.
In regard to rank. I made Corporal in my last cut of orders getting my ass out of Korea. Nice of my CO for doing that as I was discharged at that rank.. Now I never have cared much for that circus rank of Capt. or Col. as as explained I was legitimately a Private. It seems every announcer likes to intro. the elephants as trained and presented by Captain so and so.However some good guys got me the rank of "Kentucky Col." along with thousands of other guys signed by Wendell Ford and along those same lines I became an "Admiral" in the Alabama Navy signed by George Wallace and proudly have the certificates to prove it. However I don't believe the Annoucement of High School horsemanship by Admiral John Gazoonie would be very fitting. Sometimes its better to be a lowly foot soldier.

Buckles: I want to apologize to "Anonymous" for my rude posting on your blog earlier today. I still don't know who Anonymous is, but she/he has just as much right to post a comment as me or any one else.
Again, I will make a real effort to maintain an attitude of civility toward any and all bloggers. Now I'm off to adjust my attitude.

And on this Veterans Day, thanks to all for your service to America. It's what makes BLOGS like this possible.
