Found these photos today, Red unit in Columbia, S.C. Febuary 28 - March 3, 1980. The first 6 shots show the train arriving on Thursday Feb 28, it`s about 75 degrees and sunny, notice the short sleeve shirts. The next 6 shots are on Sunday, March 2nd, it`s about 25 degrees and snowing. next 2 shots are Monday, March 3rd at about 2:00 in the afternoon, with the train still in Columbia. the last show was Sunday night. I heard there were only about 250 people for that show. I`m sure glad I went to the Friday night show. We ended up with about 5 inches of snow here. This is the same snow storm that kept many people inside the arena in Greensboro, N. C. with the Blue unit that year. I remember calling off my daughters 4 year old Birthday party on Sunday, and my wife fussing at me about riding downtown to take pictures in the snow, but wouldn't have missed this chance for anything. Nice here in the Sunny South, Huh. |

I remember sleeping in the Norfolk Scope in Virginia in 1980 after more than two feet of snow hit south eastern VA . Just before that was the Greensboro date....and that was my "hometown debut" during my second year with the Blue Show.....I don't remember snow in Greensboro that year.... but I know that historically Greensboro weather was always unpredictable that time of year.... and since the onset of CRS disease, I'm trying my best to recollect things. Did it snow during move out?
The previous year, we had almost 2 feet of snow in late Feb early March (in 1979 ) when we pulled into Raleigh to play the infamous Dorton Arena. Buckles, you remember that, don't you?
I got stuck in the weather coming back back from a quick visit to Greensboro and missed opening night in Raleigh.... caught heck too. I was a "First of May" and probably deserved it. I did get some homecooked meals in Greensboro though.
blessings,
JD
The one I best remember from 1979 was in Atlanta behind the Omni where the cars were spotted.
We had a sleet storm closing day and those little Clarks couldn't get enough traction to pull the wagons up this incline to the flat cars.
As I recall they hired a couple of wreckers that wenched them up the hill one at a time.
Took most of the night.
Did that storm follow us to Raleigh that year?
JD
