The bravest woman in the world never had to negotiate a contract with Kenny Feld or Uncle Grumpy Holst...that takes nerves of steel. Perhaps "Happy" O'Donnell was brought aboard the SS Ringling to soften management's cold, cold heart.

Pretty heady stuff. Excellent elephant training and alot of thought and design had to go into the harness and carriage so as not to inhibit them from doing those fantastic tricks. Don't believe I have ever seen anything similar or close to it. Also the timeframe could be possible that Mr. Zeitz had some to do with that training prior to his leaving the Floto Show. Whoever did it had to be one fine trainewr.

That is what some trainers, who get an exalted opinion of themselves, should reflect on.

Johnny,
Those two elephants are "Kas" and "Mo" who came to the Floto Show in 1909 Shorty Alispaw's first year in charge of the elephants and but Zeitz was still there as Menagerie Supt.

Anonymous, Are you an Animal Trainer? I can only assume you are not. Otherwise, I would assume you are as proud of your work, as you are of your name. I will reflect on that a moment. Wade Burck

Buckles, What is exalted? Is that where a Pope get's kicked out of the church? Wade Burck

Col. Herriott, I'd like to open this discussion to you, as I don't know many as qualified as you on the subject of hitches, and pulling. My take, is that these were staged shot's, with the trainer/handler cropped out or out of frame. The harness does not look functional for "pulling" and as I see no bit, or ring in the nose, I don't think the lead baby
would gee, haw, or even git up, with just a strap around it's beak. The slack in the line's is also odd. Check out the head stand's. I see two differnt trunk placement's. Which is proper? I saw your Granddaughter the other day. She does a great job with the mixed act. My best, Wade Burck

Wade, I checked it out, you don't have to worry, you're not covered...

exalted - of high moral or intellectual value; elevated in nature or style; "an exalted ideal"; "argue in terms of high-flown ideals"- Oliver Franks; "a noble and lofty concept"; "a grand purpose"

You can sleep at ease, knowing "synonymous anonymous" was not taking a shot at you.

Casey, ME!!!!!!!!!!!!! I assumed it was Johnny, that was being ambushed. Now that I look again, I see Johnny's comment posted at 10:27 and Anonymous's at 10:31? Strange. Wade Burck

As one great show man once said "That is a hell of a trick even if he didn't do it !"
I am afraid I will have to go with the John on this one.

Buckles, Did I miss a post someblace, that asked James C. Hall to weigh in with his 2 cents worth. Wade Burck

As Gene Randow once said," Its a hellava trick if he can do it and i8ts a hellava trick even if he can't do it".

I have no doubt that when Mr. Hall was a very athletic young Kinker that he could eaqsily accomplish this feat with one of the nice big brown bears in his menagerie. Just a matter of years in separation of this unique feat and that he was not in the bear biz. at that time. Too bad.

Sorry I got confused with the handstand on the bear and the elephant act.

Obviously it was staged and would like to see the continuity of how the routine would go from trick to trick, but it still is so impressive that they are in harness and connect3ed to a buggy and note no assistants in the photo. I doubt in those days they could "air brush", but I could be wrong. Certainly the proper head stand is with thye trunk curled under, but it has been done both ways, namely Bertha. I have trained both and Smokey tipped me off in how to get the trunk under if they initially didn't want to go for it.

Wade, As to the exalted crack. I am sorry you took it the wrong way. I know what I can do and have done and believe me before I would get too popous I good look in the mirror on those great6s before me and it would give me a sobering asssment of who I am. You8 must realize in all the fun we have in comments and criticizm that you and others will be part of the photos "on the blog" for the next generation. I hope we can live up to those standards. I have done my thing, good, bad or indifferent. Now its up to you. I wish you well and have alot of confidence and am quite aware of some of those accomplishments thus far. However I am not the elected critic on the subject; just a guy interested and popping of on my own thoughts and observations. Matt Laurish and Joe Metcaff were also unsong heroes along with Chubby Guilfoyle. Thats where I stand.e

Col. Herriott, there has been a misunderstanding. I did not take the exhalted crack anyway, except firstly I thought(I guess wrongly) that somebody was taking a shot at you, (my mistake), and secondly that somebody with the heart to say that, should have the heart to sign it. I apoligize, Johnny. Wade Burck
