I saw Noel's act for the first time 1n 1974, and it remains the most beautiful, fun and thrilling lion act I ever saw in my life (but also Larry Allan Dean got close...). Pablo is another living demonstration of the great law of show business: you can do whatever you want in the ring, but beside all is PERSONALITY...
I also saw him that year & find Mr. Noel's wardrobe was always & is here also rather Unusual & adding to the Stylish , Gallant Like type of a Charactor people can be Drawn To Respect & Admire - to come out to See & Experiance this Man who Entertains , Performs Amazing Feats with - BUT also " FROLICS WITH " & not only 1 but a Group of " Lions " - It's Awing ! It's the Man & the Beast Thing & yet he is also Playing / Having FUN , with what the Onlooker has been taught to Fear & Keep Away From at any cost . Seamingly Toying with Life Itself ! WOW ; what a livelihood & lifestyle ! Gunther also had this Charming Attribute in His Unique Style & form of Showmanship .
Smiling Inside & Out seams to have something to do with this Pizazz ?
Jewell New I think had IT ? Jules Jacot must have had IT ?
I do not understand " IT " - other than :
" IT " must be a GIFT ! & that IS ; " the Attraction "
It is amazing to think that in 1962 in this same circus, at the time of those pictures, a second cage act was featured in the show: it was a young blond german presenting a tiger with two elephants... In fact Spanischer National Circus was the name of Circus Williams seasons 1962-65, with a show conceived by Arturo Castilla, the great spanish impresario that in the same years created the Americano concept with Togni. You can see Pablo's and Gunther's acts filmed from that show in the "Rings around the world" movie.
When LIFE magazine used to cover RBBB's Garden runs, a photo was featured of Noel just bloodied by a lion, who evidently had clawed his forehead. Upon one visit, I heard the rumor that his assistant, I think his name was Pedro, carried a pistol loaded with live rounds outside the cage. His instructions were to kill Noel if he came under attack, and it was said Pedro was nuts and would have done it. Anyone know about this claim?

I am a bad shot so I always had my trusty C02 Fire extinguisher handy! Fly foggers used to drive the meanest cats into corners!
