Jean Allen #8

Scan10142, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

At the close of the disastrous 1938 season, Eddie and Jean both left the Cole Show and in fact were divorced. Jean seen here with Downie Bros. Circus in 1939 while by 1943 Mr. Allen was on the Ringling Show where he routined the elephants for "The Changing of the Guard" production number.

Being predminately horse acts or displays in the Cole program, Mr. Terrell had a high regard for women that were accomplished horse people such as Miss Allen, Marion Knowlton, Babe Woodcock, Anne Hamilton, Gee Gee, Geiogia Sweet, Jinx Adams, Shirly Byron and others who could also present-style the elephant acts and were rated above the general "bally girls" and given status in the "ladies dressing room". Having abilities of High school, menage, Specialty horses [waltz and rear], roman riding [sxteen horse hitch hippodrome races] trick riding and bareback riding. Also it seems that t5hey represented "stalwarts" [don't know if that is the right word] but indeed were responsible for backyard morale. Oh, goodness I forgot Dorothy Herbert.

I had no idea that Jean was with Downie as well. That is an interesting connection.

This ability would also extend to show owned dog acts, pony drills and Marion Knowlton would work a seal act.

A number of regulars in the Bally Girl dept. would be Louieville girls from the number of years that the show wintered there and would go on to marrying various bosses on the show. Notable would be Toni Martin Scott.

The liberty horses would always be Male dominated, but those trainers would certainly be part of all the equestrian displays. What a great circus.
