MAIL0402, originally uploaded by bucklesw1. I took this picture of Ed Healy and Benny White when I was on the show in 1957. They worked the two end ring elephant acts for Hugo. In 1955 they sent the two little elephants ahead of the show out of Chicago. Vernon Duffy didn't get along with Smokey and was working in some other department at the time but was the only guy available with any experience so he was put in charge. Healy worked up around the front end as a driver, in fact he served as chauffeur when Buddy North, etc. were around. He always liked elephants and volunteered to dive the elephant truck. I don't think Duffy was still with this unit when it got to Atlanta. It didn't take Healy long to learn how to handle the punks and after the season closed, remained in the elephant department til around 1960. Someone once told me that lived in Sarasota.
