Dailey Bros. Circus 1949 #2

SAVE2928, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Ben Davenport imported seven young elephants in 1947 and nine more even younger in 1948. The smallest seen in this picture "Baby Butch" with attending mahout Pierre.
I saw the show with my folks in 1948, the eight big harness elephants came from the train following the pole wagon. Later Louie Reed astride his bhrama bull arrived with fourteen young elephants and finally "Butch" was transported to the lot in a wagon.
The most unique thing I remember was that all the elephants wore bells of various sizes, as seen in this picture and it made quite a constant clatter around the lot.

She died July 8th of this same year. Smokey told me it was from liver flukes and from her condition seen in these pictures, he was probably right.

The bells make a ton of sense...how many of us have been on the backlot and the handlers not paying attention and next thing you know you've got one hot mama breathing down your neck! Most recently this happened to me on the RBBB engagement at the continental arena where the girls have to do a cul-de-sac impersonation to get to the portal! One second they're waiting for their time to come in, I'm walking up the ramp, next thing I here is "Move Up, Move Up" and Asia's trunk is 1' behind me....wish they had bells on their toes that day cuz I almost crapped my pants....when they here their music there's no stopping them!

Regards
