OFF SUBJECT:

FLASH--Roberto Gonzalez, 35, was killed in a fall from his aerial silk ribbon act, during a performance with Circo Vasquez, Monday night (4/30) in Whittier Narrows, California.

Gonzalez fell only an estimated 15 feet due to a rigging failure, but reportedly his neck was broken and he died on impact. OSHA confiscated the rigging for a determination of its failure, as the circus tore down for its next move.

Whittier Narrows is a suburb of Los Angeles.

Funeral arrangements for Gonzalez were incomplete early Tuesday (5/1).

Today's (5/2) LA Times corrects the late performer's name as Roberto Valenzuela. He was a native of Veracruz, Mexico, and had been with Circo Hnos. Vasquez the last 4 seasons.

The accident happened on the lot at Whittier Narrows Recreational Area, in South El Monte, California. As a local paramedic hired by the circus attended Valenzuela, show employees immediately ushered the public from the Big Top.

California/OSHA investigated whether the circus "dictated aspects of the artist's performance", but under the law could not hold the circus liable for violations of state regulations, since it was confirmed that Valenzuela was an independent contractor, performing his act as he chose.

The circus tore down and made the jump into Panorama City, California, where performances were scheduled to resume on Friday (4).

Ringmaster Jesus Vasquez said he could feel the grief of all his colleagues, but he said, "The show must go on."
