St. Louis Zoo #3

The Elephant Show started in 1937. In 1936 the Zoo acquired a baby female Asian named Clarabelle, after a local socialite. She was kept in the Antelope House were keeper Floyd Smith, with the help of chimp trainer Leon Smith (no relation), taught her a few tricks. Director George Vierheller was pleased with the public's reaction to Clarabelle and brought two more baby elephants, Marian and Vi, so Floyd could start an Elephant Training Show. The show was presented in what is now the Grevy's Zebra yard and the show elephants were kept in the antelope area.
