When I reviewed the shows at the Hampton Coliseum and Norfolk Scope while I was with the Newport News Daily Press, I always used one phrase to decribe Charley -- the best tiger act in the world. And I meant it every time I wrote it. He gave too much to Ringling to be treated the lousy way he was treated at the end. They lost an extremely talented man and a real pro.

What happened to Charly at the end of his Ringling tenure?

During a performance in San Francisco some AR wacko came down from the seats and interfered with the show by handcuffing himself to some object.
During the ensuing scuffle Charly smacked the guy around a bit and was immediately dismissed.
This brings to mind the time the show hired a company to administer Lie Detector Tests to all the Concessionaires to find out if any were stealing.
The Concession Boss asked what to do with those who might fail the test and was told, "Fire those you don't need and for those you do need, file the results away for later when they aren't needed".
The same thing.

Brings to mind poor Dr. Henderson. He called me in 1984, and asked me to meet him at the back gate. Seem's they wouldn't let him in the quarters, unless somebody meet him, and he agreed to stay at their trailer, until he was ready to be brought back to the gate. By the way Buckles, just came in from loading Nic and Gypsy, they are on the way to Sunny California. Nic wasn't bad, but Gypsy dug deep into her bag of tricks. Wade Burck

From Eric:

I’ve heard from several different people that, since day one, the Felds have been obsessed with having their employees look youthful in appearance. I feel certain that the real reason Charly was let go was because he LOOKED OLD! There is an old saying that goes “we trade our youth for experience.” Judging from the way the Ringling show is run today, it appears that the Felds continue to give greater weight to youth than to experience. ‘nuff said!

And who had the balls to "dismiss" fire Charly? That is such a terrible thing that those jerks did to him! I had lost touch with everyone on the shows and had never heard that bit. That is awful! What about his contract with RBBB?
