Comment from ToddP

Buckles: Forgive me. Memory loss. But during the grand opening, I seem to recall the people-performers taking their bow on the front track and the elephants doing a long mount on the rear track. If I am correct, how did the long line of elephants exit? After the long mount did they continue counter clockwise around the track and out? Or did they turn 180 degrees and exit on the rear track?Thank you. --ToddP

You are right to a point, the performers did indeed style on the front track at the close of Opening giving the illusion the number had concluded. But instead as they exited, we came down the back track on a run, circled the arena and into the long mount as seen above. Quite a piece of showmanship and a powerful way to open a show.
I couldn't say just how this was done, but when I came around the turn the front track was always clear. The show girls simply stepped up on the ring curb as you can see, the others must have run for their lives. Karen would know.
The cross mount at the conclusion of the elephant display was also on the front track.

And that, Boys and Girls, was CIRCUS !!!

We remember this with great fondness as a circus unsurpassed by any others. The generation behind me fully believes the under canvas railroad shows were the best ever seen. What is the generation in front of us going to remember as the best circus they ever saw?

If I remember correctly, at the Ringling Park the end of the long mount and the ends of the cross mount were off stage in the wings.

Gee I remember how great the 137th Bellobration was! What a shame the GSOE has become what it has!

Not likely, they will probably say "Cirque Du Soleil"
.

In fact they already do.

From Eric:

You've discovered the Felds' secret. They are attempting to reinvent their circus as "Cirque Du Soleil." They still haven't figured out how to make do without the animals, but they're working on it.

If I had to choose ONE image to reflect the true entertainment spectacular that "most" of know as THE CIRCUS... this would be it!
...elephants...cagewagons...showgirls...with Barbara on Anna Mae in the lead. It doesn't get any better than this!

As ole Whitey said,
"And that, boys and girls, was CIRCUS!!!"

Anyone remember, in Madison Square Garden, the first show after they froze the floor for hockey? That first corner was right out of the Keystone cops.

Dear Nicole,

Seems like you and me are the last visionaries who think people are too sophisticated for old fashioned glitz. I spent the week at Disney World. Honest Nicole, I tried to tell the hundreds of thousands of people that is was too corny, but they wouldn't listen. They just kept pouring through the gates. All those bright colors would have made you cry, Nicky. Haven't they heard of jogging suits and black rubber floors? It was just horrible. For crissakes, even the maids at the hotel were in wardrobe. Doesn't anyone understand? I can only hope that someone there will see the light and find someone just like you to straighten them out. What the hell did Walt know?
Nicky, you and I know there will be enough yuppies willing to fork over 150 bucks for a seat when your cirque transforms itself into the new Soleil. THEN, who will be laughing?

I enlarged the photo and found me behind the showgirls, pushing the tigers into the Great Cage!
