Every Era has its Style & its Stars . This year/era was unique for many reasons some of which I feel are ; The availability of many Very Tallented Performers from all over the Globe - thanks to Troly Rhodins Expertise . The Bright & Flashy " DISCO ERA " & its OVERALL FREEDOM & its Jazzy
" PARTY TIME " influence with all its Glitz , Exciting Attmousphire & Style . Most certainly much credit would be attributed to Don Foote for HIS Outstanding Contribution & the other Creative & Tallented Staff Members & There Crews . The use of Modern Technologys Lighting / the electric winches / bubble blowing machines etc. , the Musicians ! - all synchronized to an outstanding precise colaboration of Man-Beast
& Machine working in Harmony to have obtained such a Superb Entertaining Dreamlike Realm -
" THE CIRCUS "

Very wise considerations, I totally agree. Every ear has his Style and Stars.
I just wish to add that today if you wants to do a Style and Stars circus...well, you can have the same ingredients available, and better than ever. The new Broadway is giving a lot of the Doon Foote equivalent of our era; many new inspirations have replaced the "disco" stile; the modernity of technology is better than ever. Speaking of talents, the globe is full of talented performers. For example, if you want to do a three-ring teeterboard display today, you can have the best tricks ever, with the most lavish acrobatic coreographies conceivable. If you want to do russian bar, it never was good as today. Try to put two flying trapeze acts, and you can have Coreans and Mexican quadruples at the same time...
A lot of excellent animal trainers are around the world, and good clowns are neither missing too...

Ringling in the 80s was surely the state of the art circus of his times, as is Soleil today; as was Hans Stosch Sarrasani or the Soviet Circus at their times.
The most difficult thing for a circus is to be a circus of his contemporary time, and fully living his era. This don't means following a "modern" style: Big Apple, Roncalli, Knie or Bouglione are theatrically state of the art, fully contemporary, in a totally traditional aesthetic. They are circus for today (just as Soleil or Eloize are).
And they have an additional secret: every year the best of the best acts and animals from all around the globe. Otherwise, you must have an exceptionally talented family, as Gruss, Togni or Casartelli. Acts or family, you need those ingredients if you want keep to be just as big as your name.

GSOE was on TV tonight and was nice to see again what a big show really was. Lots of great footage of the train loading and tent set-up. My favorite part of course is the elephant act featuring Iki doing her hindleg walk. This was my lead elephant in 79 and 80. She was imported from Ceylon in 1933 by Hagenbeck and came to the US with Hugo Schmitt in 1947. It was truely an honor to work her.
