Sure makes me feel good to see a form of tradition being upheld in Europe.
Something we are losing more every day over here.

I agree with you completely, Buckles. In 1998, I had the privilege of being a participant in this wonderful circus festival with Jim Clubb's mixed act of 4 tigers, 2 lionesses, 1 liger, 3 leopards, 2 black bears and a hyena. The pagentry and splendor of this festival to honor Circus is unparalleled. A highlight in my life; a real honor to be part of it.

There were only two Americans there that year, the other being- Bello Nock. I was asked to carry a British flag during the opening ceremonies, because I was working a Clubb act. I agreed, and looking back I am very grateful they did not also request I wear a Bello wig.

Its the presenter in the TURBAN that did it. Judges must have been reading the BUCKLES BLOG.

Richard Reynolds says - -

What spectacular tusks on that African. I cannot recall ever seeing any as impressive on a captive African.

Does anyone know the particulars about this animal?

To Mr.Reynolds:
All I know is that this elephant came at Medrano circus in the 70s, I think from some German zoo. I saw it regularly every one-two year, and I always was impressed by the growing tusks. I will find out some pictures of him before. I surely can ask more to the Casartelli brothers, or put you in contact with them.

Raphaele,
Is this the same elephant they used in the '90's with Alfredo Beautour & one of his Tigers on a howda, on a hydraulic pedastal. It was one of the most impressive things I have ever seen, as the scissors jack pedastal went up, the mesh arena descended into the ring curb. We were sitting in a box seat & the sight was awsome. That was about '95 or '96.

To 24 hour man:
What a good memory! The elephant you talk about is an older indian, still part of the Casartelli herd. He also has beautiful tusks, but not so big. The act with the tiger was conceived by Davio Casartelli, with the help of Beautour. Tiger and elephant did some tricks together before the rising. You're right: the cage descending after the rise of the platform was a great thrill!

Raffaele,
I also remember a new act with camels & other exotics that I believe Alfredo also had a hand in. Perhaps you have some pictures, & a better description than I can give. Trudy & I were so impressed by this show & the very talented family that presented it.

An American carrying an British flag, because the act she was presenting was from England?.... Yet the American white tiger act of a few years ago presented by an English women, was allowed to represent Great Britian?....While the American white tiger act of 2000, presented by a Dutch gentleman represented the United States?....Shame, Shame....Is that how they do it in the olympics?......This is really a pretend world of make believe.....Both madams should have been more respectful.

.....I cant understand why somebody would not represent the country of the animals origins like William Voss. Especially if they had earned their living here for any length of time like Voss. I also cant understand carrying the flag of another country.

Proud American

I suspect it has more to do with showbiz and less to do with nationalism. Haven't we all seen plenty of American flags carried performers from elsewhere?

Mr. Trumble,
Carrying a flag as part of a pagent, such as a finale in which ever country you are working, be it French, German, Italian, or the Union Jack is a different notion then carrying/representing a country in a worldwide competition, lauded ad nausem as the circus olympics. Show some pride. I had a real dust up in Japan years ago, when they were not going to announce my act as "the All-American White Tigers", until they saw it my way. I agree with proud American, 100% Red, White, Blue. You sure better not make your living here for many years, then take the source of your lively hood oversea's and represent "your" homeland. Not unless you want to represent new high's in hypocracy and me, me ism. My family has served this great nation, that I am proud to call home, and even if that bit of resin was 24K, it is a pride that can't be had for a fancy buffet, and a back slapping hobknob.
