Carl Kludsky was one of 21 sons (yes twenty-one) of ther small-menagerie owner Rudolf Klusky, in Tchekoslovakia. In the early 1900s he transformed the entreprise in a Barnum-style 3ring circus. At the time, every European circus was impressed by the Barnum-Bailey tour of 1900-03, and all of them was turning into the 3-ring business. Kludsky had one of the largest of them, touring mainly in Austria, Italy and Eastern Europe. His menagerie was impressive. The show was mainly based on animal acts, including a group of trained zebras, one of buffalos, and four cage acts.

I recall many conversations with Hugo Schmidt telling me about Karl Kludsky and what a big show it was. I have always assumed he had been with it at one time. Also I was surprised when Hugo said he had been here in America prior to joining Ringling in bringing animals from Hagenback to the Benson animal farm, who were reps for Haganback here in America.

Hugo also stated that he had been a wild animal trainer as well as elephants. He spoke highly of Lorenz Hagenback.
