This is Harry's history, as I know it. He and I went together for a few years, probably most of his circus career. I included what I thought lead up to Harry’s circus experience as well.
It’s somewhat long, but it’s my tribute Harry. I am grateful for my time with him. He didn’t have a public career but it sounds like he made quite a difference in the animal world, all the same.
Harry was from Passaic, NJ. When Harry was young, his dad, Irving was a “Dog Walker” for extra income. Harry would go with him. From then on, I think Harry always wanted to work with animal. He was good with them and with people too.
Before Harry joined Carson and Barnes, he worked as a Parrot/ large bird tamer/trainer at a very large exotic bird store, in Houston, TX. Someone he met through the store worked at an exotic animal facility/breeding center/sanctuary. Harry bought a tiger cub for fifty dollars from the place.
Of course, later the tiger got too big to keep in an apartment at about eight months old; so, Harry gave the cub back to the breeding center. Judy the chimp from the TV show “DAKTARI” was retired and lived there. Judy seemed to know and like Harry, which was different for Judy; she didn’t like very many people. (I can’t recall the name of the center. Maybe one of you knows.)
Harry visited the tiger from time to time; at least during the time I was with him. This tiger really intrigued him and he became more interested in exotic/endangered) animals. Harry wanted to work with lions and tigers originally on the circus. The timing just wasn’t there! He was very good with apes and monkeys too but never did any paid work with either type of animal that I know.
Carson and Barnes was in TX in March/April 1979. Harry started with Carson and Barnes as a phone room person from Houston, TX. He came out to the show for a visit in June and wanted to stay to work in the animal dept. Harry worked in Menagerie the rest of the season. “Okie” Don Carr was head of Animals then.
Harry worked elephants the next year, 1980. He was considering getting a Bear act. The Bear Act visited the same time American Greeting Cards was doing some photo shoots for a “Circus Theme” card line. Harry and his bears, me, John-John Walker, Popcorn the Clown and a few others ended up on the cards and wrapping paper distributed by American Greetings Corporation, around 1983.
In 1981, (still with Carson and Barnes) Harry and his father had bought the small (3), young Bear Act. He worked them on leash. The bears did quite a few tricks as I recall. There was rarely a ripple in the act.
September that year while in route to the next town, a drunk driver hit his vehicle. Harry was hurt, the bears were fine, his truck, trailer and equipment were destroyed. The only part of the truck that wasn't smashed or burned was were Harry was sitting. His life was definitely spared that day.
The next year, 1982, Harry went out with Gopher Davenports' Ford Bros. Circus. (A subsidiary of Carson and Barnes). I came on to the show for the summer to do promotion and clowning for Gopher in June (1982). The show toured in Western Canada and Alaska. It was quite a “whirlwind” tour; there were very long jumps, ferry rides to the island towns and as many as six or more shows a day.
I worked a head of the show part-time doing publicity and promotion and clowned the other part. Harry and I didn’t get a chance to reconnect unfortunately. I am very sorry for that. I left the end of September 1982. I lost contact with him after that.
I had heard he was living in Arizona and that he had a daughter. It must have been the mid-1980’s when he ended up at Williston FL.
Harry was a very kind and thoughtful person. An easy smile, a loving and kind heart. I always felt he was a very content person, I think the animals did too. He was easygoing, seemed know what he wanted in life, (and I think he got it too!) I am honored to have known Harry as I did. That's all I know.
My thoughts and prayers are with all who were touched by his life. See you in my dreams Harry. With love, Kadee Nielson
