This man was perfectly cast in his role. Makes this old heart flutter even now. He looks like a couple of the old circus performers. Never missed a one of his movies. Him and John Garfield.
Coincidentaly I just saw this movie the other day which brought to mind ; I wonder just what type of Story Line / Lines - as a Continuious Saga , because of the numerious points to address - would an experienced " CIrcus Performer " ( or group of various experenced Troupers ) Bring to the BIG Screen " conveighing the many many Facts , Truths , Points of Interest & Excitement , Showcasing it Colorfully with an Inside Pride . Maby a Ken Burns type of Documentary would be more Suiting ?
I trust many readers saw Circus Day on TCM, Wednesday (24). The line-up was THE FLYING FONTAINES in its TCM premier, followed by Clyde Beatty in RING OF FEAR, then GSOE.
Most accounts of the GSOE filming have DeMille angrily distressed to learn Cornel Wilde was afraid of heights. Story goes he said, "But Mr. DeMille! I'm an actor, not an aerialist!" To which DeMille roared, "Then get the hell up there and act like an aerialist!"
My question is does anyone know of a REAL performer who had such a dreadful case of 'centeringitis' as Betty Hutton's character Holly had?'
In my experience nobody really cares since it rarely pays anything extra to work there anyway, at least in a display; most people I know say "I don't care if I show in the PARKING LOT so long as the money's there on payday.."
DeMille assembled his cast and crew before leaving for Sarasota, and told them to leave their Hollywood snobbishness at home--that the circus people were just as good at showbusiness as they were, and were to be respected as such by the entire Paramount company.
To Dan H: I was told by many on the film that evidently Betty Hutton didn't closely follow DeMille's edict. As stated long ago on this site, Albert White told me, in his inimitable way, "She was a snippy, prissy little missy." To Ms. Hutton's everlasting credit, after surviving a disastrous fall from grace, she is now a totally different woman, having earned a Master's degree, teaching theatre, and helping everyone in her purview as she was helped when down.
Yes. In this era, when, as we say, the Ringling show WAS the Ringling show, it carried the standard of circuses representative of its time.
The name Braden was borrowed from RBB publicist Frank Braden, but the Brad Braden character was based on Art Concello. Except Concello was known to say he never roamed the lot shouting orders at people like Heston's character did. He paid people to do that for him. Concello himself was a smooth, quiet man of indisputable influence and absolute authority.
To Anonymous: Many have striven for the Center Ring, and some have earned the right to have it in their contracts. Holly's quest can be well understood. For your next question, GSOE was written by Fredric M. Frank, Theodore St. John and Frank Cavett, with a storyline credit given to Barre Lyndon, all contracted Paramount screenwriters.
For all movie fans: Go to IMDb.com, which is Internet Movie Database, type in anything you want to know--movies, directors, cast and crew, and click on GO for links to any person or production.

I have heard the betty hutton was nothing but a bee with an itch to the circus crew throughout this film.
As a circus fan, I am wondering wsa the GSOE (movie) a good representation of the circus in the early 1950's?
Also was Brad Brayden, suppose to represent Art Concello?

Who wrote GSOE?
