A story I've told many times but never on the blog: In the early years of my career I put together a couple of small engagements. On one date I contracted Sue and Rudi, on the other I had Benny Williams bring Anna Mae to the State Capitol in New York, but did the business with Barbara. The following year I visit Beatty-Cole, Jimmy James was announcing and had known me since I was a teenager. As soon as Jimmy sees me he rushes me off to the side and says, "I hear you're doing big things in the business." I said, "Jimmy, I've done a few small contracts but I'm keeping busy." Jimmy, very adept at dealing with personalities says, "Tell me how were Lenzs and Woodcocks to deal with? They're big stars." I said, "If every act I have worked with were as professional as them my job would be easy. A total pleasure from the first moment of inquiry to the end of the engagement." Jimmy James responded with words that are classic, he said, "See that. People who HAVE an act are never a problem; it's the ones who THINK they have an act that are a pain in the ass."
That's something i learned from the super-publicist Kathy Berlin, when she was handling press for paul newman. she said superstars are easy to work with; it's the ones who think they are stars who create problems.
