Jules Jacot use to do a "head in the mouth" with a lion in the late 60s. One day he forgot to tuck away his bolo tie and the strings dangled down to the cat's gag reflex. The lion instinctively bit down on Jules head. It wasn't a bad bite but it bled a fair amount. Jules finished the act looking pretty bloodied (especially for a man in his late 70s). Jules looked upon the incident as a trainer error, but at least he got some publicity. ("If you screw up, get bit and don't get publicity just keep it to yourself.")
May I add my Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to the Woodcocks and all our Blog Buddies. Everyday I get to "check my internet stocking" and see the photos and comments. Thank You one and all. Jim Alexander
Nobody did the head in the mouth better than Pablo Noel. I saw him do it in Europe in the sixties and later on Ringling witha neutered male. He actually put his entire head in the lions mouth and then held his arms outstretced. It was awesome.
Quite a few times that Jewell would pull his face out of Solomans mouth he would have a gob of Solomans spit on his nose. Of course Jewell did have a nose! Merry Christmas to all on Buckles Blog!
A-ha ! I was some how very attracted to this photo & as anonymous states , I was also curious about those pedestal blocks & the steel bar in the back . They would give a stablity to Mr. Antone & the Lion on a " Rotating " pedestal disk which in turn would allow " ALL " the spectators this " Excelent Precise View " .
" SEASONS GREETINGS TO YOU ALL " This has been an enjoyable year here ; sharing memories , tales , experiences , knowledge , facts & observations - even future dreams & predictions .
I don't know if this is the same Carl Antoine that later became a fine bear trainer then horse trainer. He was responsible for the fine high school act of Nones family, winner of a Silver Clown in Monte Carlo.
I agree with the note on Pablo Noel. I never saw a better head in the mouth. It is one of my best memories from Circo Americano in the 70 and 80s. I would like to send some pictures...there is a mail adress to post pictures on the blog?

What one will do in life
I wonder if the round platform that the lion & trainer are on somehow rotates? Or, is it just a "target board" as we so often see used in Europe?

Other great head-in-the-mouth routines that have been presented in the last 20 years were by Alan Gold, Josip Marcan and Patricia White.
