From Raffaele De Ritis (Wednesday) #3




This is considered to be the first existing mesh wire cage ever. It was invented by Wioris Togni for his brother Darix, that in the late 50s presented 9 tigers in their own circus.
The number you see on the left is the cage patent number, that was displayed at every show. Posted by Picasa

They do look like cables - to power 4 revolving pedestals maybe??cc

Yes. The pedestals material was a kind of plexiglas in the shape of roman columns. They contained lights in different colors.
Pretty good for that times.

I think I can find some color pictures.
The set was conceived to match the "gladiator" look of Darix.
In fact,Darix was famous for working in the movies for all the great American production in the 50s and 60s (Fox, Mgm, Paramount etc.) at the time they used to come in Rome to shoot all those "historic" flicks.
In the 60, the act used the Ben Hur themes as music.
