From Eric:
“Elephant Calypso” had a nice score of mostly 1940s pop tunes with a South American flavor: "Sing a Tropical Song" (Jimmy McHugh), "The Peanut Vendor," "Heat Wave" (Irving Berlin), "Bim Bam Bum," "Brazil," plus other popular sambas and mambos from that era.
For Eric: Some blogs back, I inquired about research avenues for music used by Mabel Stark. I think what sometimes happens is, I get distracted around here and forget to hit the Publish button. Other times, I fail to make notes of the date and topic on which I inquire or comment, and have to go looking. Any assistance you may offer in discovering her charts will be noted by name in my acknowledgements. Thank you, and I'm aiming for the Publish button.
From Eric: (for Roger S.)
If you check back to that particular picture, I did post a response: I don't have any information on Mabel's music from those years. I do have an MP3 file of her 1936 appearance on the Lux Radio Theater, where she matches wits with guest host Lionel Barrymore. The next time Buckles posts some Mabel Stark photos, I'll e-mail him the file so everyone can hear her speak to us from past.
Off the subject of Donna:
Thanks, Eric. I trust we can hear that show.
We can also hear Mabel and her guests when Parley Baer arranged with his friend Ralph Edwards to have Mabel featured on THIS IS YOUR LIFE, April 26, 1950, on NBC. I have this tape, and no one will be surprised that I don't know how to share it here.
Parley loved to tell the story about the one off-stage voice Mabel didn't guess. It was her husband, Eddie Trees, who laughed at her about it for the rest of his life.
This is Donna on Siam the elephant and Karoly Donnerts, tiger trainer, wife.
