I guess back in 1887 no one had told them that it was impossible to train African elephants, so they went ahead and did it.

It was impossible to train them(too nervous, dangerous, unpredictable they said) until Asians became expensive, and then impossible to buy, then everyone could train them

The picture reminds me. For several years they had Dave Hale's big 8 camel hitch at the Big E. I was watching them in the parade and noticed that hardly anyone was paying any attention. I thought "don't you know what you're seeing?" It was impressive as anything I've seen in a long time, but I guess nothing can compete with the digital effects in the movies - real life marvells can't compare. The harness alone was amazing - must have cost 30 grand at least (and I was a harness maker, so I know, it aint cheap)On the harness note: the set used by the Hallamore Draft Hitch at the Big E cost 75,000

Reportly in 1872 when Lizzie the African elephant was 10 years old
with the Bostock&Wombwell Show,
she killed a man,George Stanton.
I dont know if it was by accident, but maybe it was.
