To: Barb...you are so right. They all worked very hard to put Circus World Museum on the map.
That's right John, everyone in the picture worked hard to get Circus World Museum up and running. They'd be rolling over in their graves if they could see what you've done to the place. I've never heard of such a ridiculous thing as bringing in a Chinese Circus to the only Museum devoted to the American Circus. There are many American acts out there that aren't on the road this summer that would love to come sit in Baraboo for a few months. But, who cares about that let's just bring in some Chinese acrobats!!
I know that every one is entitled to their opinions and that's a great part of America but Mr. Goodall and the rest of the board of Directors deserve a little bit more credit than you are giving him here. He is a fine gentleman and quite capable of speaking for himself but I'll be glad to interject by thoughts while I'm at it.
The CWM is not the only Museum dedicated to the American Circus but it is by far the best. The Chinese acrobats amaze and astound all that see them. I also love to see a variety of performers but the circus going public doesn't recognize for the most part that the unicycle act this year is not the same unicycle act they saw the last time they went as well as most other acts.
We as fans and historians as well as performers do recognize the difference but dollar for dollar we are the minority of circus goers. Facts are facts, if all of the historians, fans and model builders along with performers were the only ones that attended the circus, Each and every circus would be out of business next week.
Bob
I hate it when someone makes a little sense. Bob, we have dozens of circus schools here in America that train young people to perform. Why not give them a chance to show their stuff. School is out for those months and the parents alone would support their kids. I have seen some really talented youngsters. Steve Santos from Circus News is very involved with the youth. Has anyone ever given this a thought? The kids could live the way we did in the old days on the grounds and play circus all summer. We could also charge a camp fee. Just like summer camp to cover the cost.
Rebecca,
You are describing exactly what Circus City Festival in Peru, Circus Smirkus, Circus Kirk, Circus Kingdom, the group in St. Louis ( And I'm so sorry for this but I can't for the life of me think of their groups'name right now,) Sailor Circus and the FSU Flying High Circuses are all about. We were all youth oriented and made a fantastic summer tour.
Speaking from experience, Circus Kirk was the only touring all student circus at the time it started, the key word there being TOURING. We ran a 10 in one side show, a jamb up 1 hour and 45 minute performance with a live 10 piece brass band. We put the rag up and down everyday for four solid months each summer. We held our own against the Beatty show all summer and was even visited by Irvin and Kenneth Feld during a straw house when they had to settle for a bale of straw themselves. Never, Never underestimate the Youth in America. They will amaze you given the chance.
Bob
I still refer to Bob Parkinson's remark, it's a simple fix,"what the Circus used to be, not what it is now"!
I once told Bob of an idea I had to dress the Liberty Act like Carrousel Horses, and put hurdles spaced to give the up and down movement of a carrousel. He replied, "can you show me where it has been done in the Circus before".
I love the horse idea. Those little tiny horses would be adorable doing this. Who is out there to do this? I see a may pole in the center of the ring with ribbons attached to the horses and very fancy trappings on the horses. They would not have to do much just look beautiful.
Katja did that in the Coney Island edition of BAC
